Baton Rouge General Express Care and The Simple Greek Restaurant to Open in LSU’s Nicholson Gateway
LSU announced today that The Simple Greek restaurant and a Baton Rouge General Express Care clinic will fill two retail spaces in the university’s new Nicholson Gateway Development, the newly opened mixed-use development on a 28-acre site of the Nicholson Drive Corridor, between West Chimes Street and Skip Bertman Drive.
The two tenants join anchor retailer Matherne’s Market, fast food restaurant Wendy’s, coffee café Starbucks, apparel store Private Stock and quick-service eatery Frutta Bowls in the roughly 50,000-square-foot retail component of Nicholson Gateway.
The Baton Rouge General Express Care facility will be open seven days a week to the LSU and local community to treat serious, but non-life threatening illnesses and injuries. The clinic will also feature a lab, X-ray machine and an EKG for more serious injuries. For more information, visit BRGexpresscare.com, find on Facebook at Facebook.com/BatonRougeGeneral and follow on Twitter at @BRGeneral.
“If you wake up with the flu or need a few stitches on a Saturday, you don’t have to visit the ER to get high-quality care,” said Edgardo Tenreiro, president and CEO of Baton Rouge General. “BRG Express Care is a convenient, affordable, fast option right around the corner – because the everyday demands of school, work and family don’t stop when you’re sick.”
Opening its first Louisiana location, The Simple Greek is an interactive concept that combines hhigh-quality ingredients, open kitchens and a fun atmosphere to deliver authentic Greek cuisine in a fast casual setting. Inspired by a concept through his CNBC reality television show “The Profit,” The Simple Greek was founded by entrepreneur Marcus Lemonis in 2015.

Stirling Properties is serving as the retail developer and leasing broker on the project, working with the prime developer, Georgia-based RISE Real Estate, which specializes in student housing. New this fall, Nicholson Gateway includes 763 units of apartment-style housing for more than 1,500 students, with associated residential support spaces, such as lounge spaces, study areas, community gathering places and retail food service. The project, focused on the largest underdeveloped tract of university-owned property that is adjacent to the campus core, will turn what has traditionally been the back of the campus into an exciting new gateway district while responding to demands for on-campus housing and supporting student success, improving the campus living experience for both undergraduate and graduate students.

Matherne’s Market to be Retail Anchor Tenant in LSU’s Nicholson Gateway
LSU announced today that Matherne’s Market will be the retail anchor tenant in the university’s new Nicholson Gateway Development Project, currently under construction on a 28-acre site of the Nicholson Drive Corridor, between West Chimes Street and Skip Bertman Drive.
Matherne’s Market will occupy 17,063 square feet of the roughly 50,000-square-foot retail component of Nicholson Gateway, which will primarily serve residents of the project, the LSU community and visitors.
“Matherne’s Market is an ideal addition to Nicholson Gateway,” said Steve Waller, LSU assistant vice president of residential life and housing. “We are excited to offer our new student residents access to a well-established local grocery store, just steps from their apartment doors. An on-site grocer is an amenity that will enhance the Nicholson Gateway living experience for the more than 1,500 students who will call this new space home.”
Tony Matherne, co-owner of Matherne’s Market, said, “We are very excited to bring our new Matherne’s Market concept to the Nicholson Gateway project at LSU! This Market will have the same offerings and ‘feel’ as our downtown location. We believe that our new store format, with a focus on fresh, specialty and prepared foods, catering and online shopping, with pickup and delivery options, highlights our company strengths and delivers the products and services that our customers want and need. Although our new format is smaller in size than our previous Baton Rouge supermarkets, this will be a full-service market that will provide the residents, students, faculty and staff, and visitors to LSU, as well as the residents and businesses of the surrounding area, with a clean, friendly and inviting shopping experience.”
Matherne said, “Our over 35 years of retailing experience gave us the confidence to downsize the footprint of the store while improving the customer’s experience. Our carefully selected product assortments provide great variety in all product categories, while also allowing us to improve upon the shopping experience for customers. Our new format is efficient for customers to shop for the items they want with the convenience they demand.”
The LSU Property Foundation, an affiliate of the LSU Foundation, is facilitating Nicholson Gateway. Stirling Properties is serving as the retail developer and leasing broker on the project, working with the prime developer, Georgia-based RISE, which specializes in student housing. Slated for completion by this fall, Nicholson Gateway will include 763 units of apartment-style housing for over 1,500 students, with associated residential support spaces, such as lounge spaces, study areas, community gathering places and retail food service. Team Stirling Properties Spreads Holiday Cheer!
In the spirit of the Holiday Season, Stirling Properties participated in the Volunteers of America Christmas Wish “Angel” Project. For the 6th consecutive year, our company donated Christmas gifts, food baskets and other essential items to local families in need across our Gulf South region.
The annual Christmas Wish Project helps bring joy and holiday cheer to families and individuals who might not have a Christmas this year. Through Volunteers of America, participating families submit “wish list” gift items for each individual. The wishes are noted on angels and hung on the company Christmas tree where Stirling Properties and employees can select and grant them. This year, we were able to fulfill every single wish! In all, 18 families and more than 46 children, adults and seniors received Christmas gifts. Additionally, 10 families on the Northshore received food baskets with tasty treats and supplies for the holiday season.
Stirling Properties’ Stewardship Committee organized the company-wide event by partnering with Volunteers of America in Greater New Orleans, Greater Baton Rouge and the Southeast to serve the New Orleans Northshore and Southshore, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Mobile and Shreveport communities.
In addition to donating to the Christmas Wish Project, Stirling Properties hosted its third annual Northpark Christmas Bazaar, Bake Sale & Raffle on Friday, November 17th. Local vendors, as well as employees of the Northpark office complex sold crafts, jewelry, ornaments, artwork, beauty products and many other great gift items.
The Christmas Bazaar raised $2,500, which was also donated in full to Volunteers of America to assist more families in our area with emergency holiday needs.
The Holiday Season is a time for gratitude, generosity and giving back to our region. Stirling Properties is committed to supporting the communities where we live and work, and we will continue to support local nonprofits, community groups and charitable organizations throughout the year and beyond.
Thank you to all of the vendors, donors and shoppers who made this project a huge success. On behalf or Stirling Properties, we wish you and yours a joyous Holiday Season and a Happy New Year!
